PhD project

Major: Psychology, School of Humanities and Social Science

PhD topic:

The use of traditional, alternative and complementary medicine in Indonesia: an exploration of the range of underlying concepts and approaches, focusing on women with various complaints.

Abstract:

At least 80% of the Indonesian population occasionally or frequently uses traditional medicine. Studies on the topic of traditional medicine in Indonesia so far only focus on the ancient origin of traditional medicine and its status within the society. In contrast, this research seeks to identify the concepts and approaches underlying women’s use of contemporary urban traditional medicine (TM) or of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) with a grounded theory approach. With semi-standardized interviews with women which focus on previous experience of illness, experience and evaluation of previous TM/CAM treatment as well as possible biomedical treatment, this research uniquely combines and assesses the theories of health-seeking from an anthropological, sociological, psychological and biomedical perspective. This study will provide results which directly emerge from the data and not from preconceived theories and thus foster the research on complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). It thus aims to contribute to overcoming the differentiation between CAM- and TM-countries and provide an interdisciplinary approach to non-biomedical health-care with its global complexities.
